Course Content

What Makes a Good Flyer

1. Intro

  • “Have you ever seen a flyer that was hard to read or confusing? What made it that way?”

  • “We’re going to explore what makes a flyer clear, eye-catching, and effective.”


2. Examples

Show 2 types of flyers:

  1. Well-Designed Flyers

    • Clear alignment of text and images

    • Proper spacing and margins

    • Balanced text-to-image ratio

    • Strong visual hierarchy

  1. Cluttered / Confusing Flyers

    • Too much text or too many images

    • Poor alignment

    • Crowded layout, no clear focus

 

Discussion Prompt:

  • “What draws your eye first? Which flyer is easier to read and understand?”

Photoshop or Illustrator Demo

Create a new letter-size document (8.5” x 11”)
Walk through:

  • Setting up guides or grids
  • Placing headline, image, and details
  • Using alignment tools for text and objects
  • Adding boxes or backgrounds for text sections
  • Creating visual flow with font sizes and colors

Work Time – Event Flyer

Students create a flyer for a made-up or real event such as:

  • Youth night
  • Photography showcase
  • Bible study group
  • Music concert
  • “Fall Fest” or “Game Night”

Requirements:

  • Clear headline
  • Date, time, location
  • At least one image
  • 3 levels of text (title, subheader, body)
  • Use a grid or structured layout

Encourage:

  • Consistent color scheme
  • Good alignment

Readability from a distance

Homework
  1. Submit flyer as JPG

  2. Complete short reflection:
