Writing & Editing Workshop

Lesson Plan: Editing & Formatting Articles

Focus Skills:

Clarity – Does the article make sense? Are ideas expressed clearly?

Structure – Does it follow the article format (headline, lead, body, closer)? Are paragraphs organized logically?

Grammar – Are spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure correct?

Scripture

Proverbs 15:22 – “Plans fail when there is no counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.” Discuss collaboration and teamwork.

In class work
  • Group Edit Together

    • Put one student’s article on the screen (or board).

    • As a group, check for clarity, structure, and grammar.

    • Model how to give kind and helpful feedback (example: “This part is strong, but could we add a transition here?”).

    • Make live edits so students see how changes improve the article.

  • Group Discussion on Feedback

    • After editing together, talk about:

      • What kind of comments were most helpful?

      • How do we keep feedback kind and constructive?

      • What makes editing as a group useful vs. editing alone?

  • Format in Microsoft Word

    • Instead of using Canva or Google Slides, we will add each article into Word during class.

    • As a group, look at how the article looks in a newspaper-style layout.

    • Make edits directly in Word so everyone sees the process.

Homework

1. Final Article Submission
Revise your article based on peer feedback and submit the final version by next class (typed, edited, proofread).

2. Photo or Graphic (Optional)
If your section needs an image, find one or take one yourself (original or copyright-free preferred).

3. Headline Polishing
Make sure your headline is clear, catchy, and connected to your story.
