Product Photography

By the end of this lesson, you will:

  1. Understand how to photograph products for advertising and e-commerce.

  2. Learn how to control lighting, background, and composition for clean product shots.

  3. Practice creating visually appealing images that make a product stand out.
  • Scripture: Matthew 5:16 – “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

In the same way, effective product images are intentional displays; they make features, craftsmanship, and usefulness clearly visible so others can “see” the truth about the product and respond—usually by trust, interest, or purchase.

Course Content

  • Goals:

    • Make the product look appealing.

    • Clearly show details and texture.

    • Match the brand’s style.

Composition & Lighting Tips
  • Composition:

    • Centered product for catalogs.

    • Creative angles for lifestyle marketing.

    • Use props sparingly to avoid distraction.

  • Lighting:

    • Soft, even lighting to avoid harsh shadows.

    • Reflectors to fill shadows.

Hands-On Practice

Activity: “Ad Ready”

  • Students choose a product and set up a mini-shooting station.
  • Take:
    1. A clean, plain background product shot.
    2. A lifestyle shot (product in use or styled scene).
    3. A creative close-up focusing on texture or unique detail.

Homework
  • Assignment: Choose a product from home and create two types of product photos:

    1. A clean background e-commerce style photo.
    2. A lifestyle/advertisement-style shot.
  • Evaluate your e-commerce photo: Did even lighting eliminate shadows and glare to showcase the product’s true features? Connect this to glorifying the Creator through honest representation.

  • In your lifestyle shot, how did the setup direct attention to the product’s benefits, similar to good deeds pointing others to “your Father in heaven”?
